Villa Volleyball has been in existence for fourteen years. In 1993 Joe Boland began coaching the team and simultaneously began an era of great success. With Villa Maria Academy being such a small school, the team originally began playing in the AA division. The team has always been located in district one. Throughout the years as the team has accomplished more and more they were allowed to participate in the AAA division, usually only for larger schools. Over time Villa Volleyball has had many rivals, including Unionville and Bishop Shanahan. The hurricanes have always been a strong and feared team.
This is a personal account of the 2005 State Championship tounament:
The most motivational volleyball game I ever played was in the 2005 Pennsylvania State Tournament. My team was set to play the number one seed in a semi-final match. Though the other team was more skilled than we were, my team was unwilling to give up, determined to succeed, and willing to do whatever it would take to accomplish our goal. During the game, it was made clear that my team was ready for the challenge, working together so well that it was as if we were one giant heart, beating in rhythm continuously throughout the match. We achieved our goal that day. To succeed in a volleyball match a team must come together and work like a well oiled machine. Each individual must strive to be a highly functioning part of the “machine.” I feel that the Hurricanes have something special and always will because they truely bring out the meaning of team.
